Description of the painting
A study based on a sketch from Jac. J. de Vries.
My great grandfather made many sketches. Most of them are of scenes around the Netherlands. Some of them he turned into charcoal or water colour paintings, a few live on in oils, but most just lived on as just that: sketches. This particular scene was made into a larger charcoal drawing. I was in a more gloomy kind of mood and this dune scene allowed me to pour some of that feeling onto canvas. This landscape might feel not just a bit gloomy but desolate as well. Due to the subdued, darker colours it might even feel a bit ominous to some.
