Description of the painting

At mooring post VII is a painting based on a sketch from Jac. J. de Vries. My great grandfather made many sketches. Most of them are of scenes around the Netherlands. Some of them he turned into charcoal or water colour paintings, a few live on in oils, but most just lived on as just that: sketches.

This particular scene was made into a larger charcoal drawing by him. I didn’t know that until after I’d already made two versions. This latest version is part of the first collection “Heritage from the coast”. A collection of paintings in yoghurt style, based on Jaq. J. de Vries’ sketches. This latest rendition of At mooring post VII is a true “yoghurt style” painting. This technique allows me to paint even when my shoulders are tight, because I use drinking straws and a palette knife to create a landscape. You can see it in action by following this link. I’ve filled in the design with some water colour first so you have a quick idea of what the finished painting will look like. After I paint the painting needs about a week to dry out.
The “yoghurt style” that I use to create paintings from my greatgrantfathers’ sketches is quite versatile. As I create more and more, I’m getting better at creating the details that I want.

In Marieke Kampermans’ course “Discover your own painting style” I decided to try out some new things with my semi pouring style. Oppies! is the first painting that contains a more detailed animal than the birds I use here.
