Description of the painting

I was experimenting with a lot of things in Marieke Kampermans’ course “Discover your own style”. I also decided to try out some new things with my semi pouring style. The “yoghurt style” that I use to create from my greatgrantfathers’ sketches is quite versatile. Making these Jellyfish was a test to see if I could create extremely fine lines.

The piece itself got the name Oppies! First, because one of my nieces loves to call anything that resembles octopi and yellyfish “Oppies”. Secondly because it seems like the jellyfish are ascending in the water, i.e. going up!

Though my great grandfather never sketched jellyfish, I feel like they truly belong to the “Erfgoed van de kust”, the “Heritage from the coast”, series. The series is a mixture of his sketches and my childhood memories. And, just like my niece, I was fascinated by the jellyfish we found on the beach. I still love photographing them whenever I encouter them in an aquarium.

The Oppies! can be seen in Utrecht througout the month of April in Utrecht
