Description of the painting

Reddingsweg, Rescue road to mooring post VII, is an inspiring sketch by my greatgrandfather. It immediately brought back memories of walks with all kinds of stuff to enjoy a day at the beach and the walks when we went on whilst visit my greataunt. The dune landscape had to be among the first paintings in the series “Heritage of the coast” because of this.

I experimented with all kinds of things in the course “Discover your own style” by Marieke Kamperman. One of the things I discovered was a preference for “floating mountains”. The phenomenon where the foot of the mountain is lighter than the top edge. This might be a result of my preference for Japanese art and Bob Ross, who also often created floating mountians.
I tried to capture the feeling of those “floating mountains” in my semi-casting style: The “yoghurt style”. I use this style to bring my great-grandfather’s sketches to life. The technique, where I manipulate the paint by blowing the paint with a straw, and a little help from a palette knife, is very versatile. The more I practice and try, the easier it becomes to create the desired effects. The course has helped me enormously to allow myself to keep playing and discovering.

Reddingsweg and more paintings from the series “Heritage of the coast” can be seen in Utrecht throughout April
