Description of the painting
Walking along the shore is a painting based on the sketch Bij meerpaal VII by my great-grandfather Jac. J. de Vries. My great-grandfather made many sketches. Most of them are of scenes around the Netherlands. He converted some of them into charcoal or watercolour paintings, a few live on in oil paint, but most of them simply lived on as that: sketches.
I mirrored this specific scene. That way I could go for a walk around the island. The poem Footprints in the sand is a huge encouragement in difficult times. There are enough of them for me with the consequences of my Acquired Brain Injury. It is good to always know that I am supported. My Heavenly Father sees everything and the Heavenly armies encourage me on my way.
The painting Walking along the Shore is part of the first collection “Heritage from the coast”. A collection of paintings in yoghurt style, based on the sketches of Jac. J. de Vries. The Walk along the Shore is also a “yoghurt style” painting. This technique allows me to paint even when my shoulders are tense, because I use drinking straws and a palette knife to create a landscape. You can see it in action by following this link . I first filled in the design of Bij Meerpaal VII with some watercolor, so you can quickly get an idea of what the finished painting will look like. The finished painting takes about a week to dry. The “yogurt style” that I use to create paintings from my great-grandfather’s sketches is quite versatile. As I create more and more paintings, I get better and better at creating the desired details. As you might notice in the picture, there is some reflection in the water of the sea. These paintings are finished with a high gloss varnish and will always look somehwat wet
In the course “Discover your own painting style” by Marieke Kamperman, I decided to try out some new things with my semi-pouring style. Oppies! is the first painting that contains a more detailed animal than the simple birds that are typical for the “Heritage of the Coast” series.
